With a passion for bringing independent design to the forefront and encouraging the Australian emerging art & design scene. I went last year, and loved every bit of the evening – so great to see new things and the vibe is very cool, I will try and take some  pictures this year to share with you all.  If you can make the time to go yourself, its definately worth it.

The Design Files

With all the net surfing I seem to do, I must admit there is one site I continually go back to, for inspiration and information, always interesting and up to date with the latest in what is happening and where, The Design Files are a constant source of outstanding Australian Design information.  Am I too old to have a hero? – well before anyone answers that – I have one, Lucy Feagins.  Lucy is the person behind The Design Files blog and is rapidly becoming not only famous on the net, but her first editorial stylist work can be seen in this months Inside out Magazine.  Lucy is a props buyer/set dresser in the film industry in Melbourne.  The site is updated daily, and Lucy is regularly interviewing some of Australia’s most talented designers, artists and creative professionals.  Their is no doubt that she herself is just like the people she interviews and I am sure we will be seeing her name pop up more and more over the year. I was just a ‘little’ bit excited last year when Lucy wrote a post about mybowerbird, here is what she had to say. (insert link) A gret big thankyou I send to her for her kind words and encouragement.  Attached here are some images from just one of my favourite design file discoveries, read here for Lucy’s full article on the very talented Nicholas Jones.(insert link)

Rabbit Trap Timber

I am a sucker for anything old, recycled, antique and what my husband will regularly refer to as ‘junk’.  As a child I spent years of trawling after my mother through antique stores and clearing sales. I can still hear myself complaining of the boredom and pleading “can we go now?”.  As it turns out I have now grown to love those same shops and it is my turn to quietly bribe my children and whisper, “don’t touch or the shop lady will eat you!”

A few of my favourite haunts have recently gone online, so for those of you who need a fix of ’something old is new again’, try these

Rabbit Trap Timber is rescued, reclaimed, recycled furniture.  The  creative duo Robert and Justine Taylor  have developed an ecclectic collection inspired by 1930’s depression furniture.  The designs are simple with a quirky edge, due to the nature of recycling each piece is unique and has its own character and beauty. Justine also a flair for rescuing neglected peices of furniture and bringing them back to life.  You can vistit Rabit Trap Timber at their online gallery, they update with new furniture daily and all pieces are very well priced.  or they have a stall at the Bowral Farmers Market on the Second Saturday of Each month.

Doug Up On Bourke

Doug up on Bourke is one of the largest sources of industrial, commercial, rustic antiques and hard core collectables in Sydney today.

All their stock is sourced in Australia and they specialise in mid 1800’s to late 1950’s. Doug Up On Bourke has a mindblowing collection of pigeon hole units, timber plan drawers, filing cabinets, rustic kitchen tables and trestle tables, advertising signs and old road signs. There are industrial work benches, old machinery tables, chairs, old bakelite phones, lovely old suitcases and shipping trunks, rustic sawhorses, childrens toys and chairs, enamel and gal buckets , nickle framed showcases, early tram and bus rolls and not forgetting the extensive selection of more than 200 old watering cans.

Make sure you have plenty of time as Doug Up On Bourke is a place to browse, as both the store and their online galllery is a place to mooch around slowly, a place where surprises lurk and memories of the past come flooding back.

Pay a visit to Doug Up On Bourke, I promise you that your first visit will not be your last. Each time I go online I find another yet another surprise!

David Met Nicole

The names itself fascinates me.  Who is David and when and where did he meet Nicole.  I need to know the storey!  What I do know is that this is a fabulous store with products ranging from furniture, lighting, eclectic pieces for the home and clothing, vantage and contemporary, both men’s and women’s.
The DavidmetNicole online store is overwhelming.  Their range is enormous – my favourite parts are the lighting (I have a fascinations with industrial lamps at the moment) and don’t forget to check out the ‘items of interest’, but be warned you may get stuck there, so much to see.
A sale is always a good excuse to buy something and it just so happens DavidmetNicole has one until the 6th of March.
So does anyone know how DavidmetNicole?

Gina & May

Well with all the rain we have had in the last week, I thought it timely to talk about umbrellas. I also need one myself, so I may as well share my discovery of these super stylish brollies. I am tired of always carrying the umbrella that has been dragged home by my husband after some promotional golf day, they are generally black with an insurance company logo splashed across the side. I am not sure if I lose them on purpose, or I am just forgetful (perhaps it’s both) none the less, I seem to be stuck with no umbrella. Not any more.

Gina & May Designer umbrellas are my answer. Gina & May have created a boutique collection of umbrellas that speak to high quality and functionality. mybowerbird loves the wooden handle, and especially loves the compact size the umbrella can fold down to (folds down to 19cm). Perfect for the hand bag or storing in your glove box. Vibrant colours and graphic shapes. The simple, yet bold look of this playful range, make for a striking statement, particularly on a cold and miserable day, when a burst of colour can brighten up your day as well as passers-by.

My biggest problem now, which one? Don’t wait until it rains and then wish you had of purchased one of them, have a look at the online store.

SAMBAG – My New Boots

Well it is coming to the time of the year where we get to discuss winter essentials.  A good pair of boots, in black and brown are essential to every girls wardrobe.  I have only just started looking around for the perfect pair and this pair of SAMBAG boots is looking like they belong on my feet.  They just look soft and perfect to slip into everyday.  These boots come in black, elephant grey and tan (pictured) and I think are well priced at $400.
Take a peak at their trench coats, they are a classic cut and come in fabulous colours and are a steal at $220. SAMBAG online also have some yummy cashmere jumpers and of course a new range of their signature ballet flats
If you are a bit scared to by shoes online you check the website for the boutiques in Sydney and Melbourne - don’t be shy though if you get the size wrong you can just post them straight back. Winter here we come.

Ella and Kate

Here you will find lots of gorgeous hair accessories for little people. All handmade in Australia!
The range includes hair accessories for girls of all ages from our beautiful Baby Bows to our Big Satin Bow for older girls. Baby Hair Bows, the Signature Hair Bow and now Flower Hair Clips, you will find it all at Ella and Kate.
My daughter will testify that I am no amazing hairdresser, much to her dismay.  So anything that makes my life easier and her hair look pretty I am very happy about.  Don’t miss the section on school bows – perfect.  I actually went shopping with my daughter (age 7) here, she could chose her bows and we had fun.  So I have introduced Ella to the world of online shopping.  It was great, no complaining, no getting tired and no bribing required and she loved checking the post to see if her parcel arrived.  A happy experience for all involved.

Many a mother has complained about the lack of children’s clothing for 7 -14 year olds.  Summer + Quincy a new children’s store in Sydney aims sell clothes that children want to wear and, more importantly, that mothers want them in to, too – clothes at the right price, in quality fabrics with an emphasis on colour.  As a mother of a 9 year old boy I was most excited to discover this shop.  So hard to find classic/cool clothes for a boy that don’t have some surf label screaming across the front.  Nothing against surf labels, or the people who wear them – its just that we live a long way from any beach, my children are the closest thing to being ghostly white and if I was being really honest – I am conservative and old fashioned and I think surf clothes look untidy!  Now that I have written that my son will probably refuse to wear anything else for the rest of his life, thats the way things usually turn out for parents……

So anyway that is my secret of the day, the store is located at 222 Edgecliff Road, Woollahra –  a skip and a jump from Bondi Junction.  Summer +Quincy are not selling on line yet, but I will be sure to let you know when they do.

fluer-wood-250FLEUR WOOD

Haven Maxi Dress – Black

The fashion for chicks this season appears to be either very very short or very long dresses.  I am tipping that the good old maxi dress is flaterring for most body shapes.  Perfect for those days when you are feeling like some coverage, too white, dare I say too hairy, or you just are in the mood to feel feminine.  This Fleur Wood dress is classic and a good investment as teamed with some boots, a skivvy underneath and a denim jacket, it will see you through to winter.

100% silk maxi dress in black with keyhole opening at the front and trimmed with a large ruffle. The waist is elasticated with a removable thick waist tie and the hem is finished off with a large gathered ruffle.

Bassike

300x200The name is intended to say it all: Bassike, a label of lust-worthy proportions born out of the simple desire to provide wardrobe staples that could be worn with ease. The brainchild of close friends Deborah Sams and Mary Lou Ryan, it stepped onto the Antipodean design scene in July 2006.  From that point on, it has flourished; and what began as a breezy collection of organic cotton-jersey T-shirts, dresses and trousers has since rounded out into more softly tailored territory. The intention however, lives on: current, eternal and effortless, each piece is designed to work seperately but also in conjunction and although new styles have been added – namely wool jersey, cotton shirting, denim and leather – beauty still belongs to the wearer. With Bassike, personal style resonates.
Check out their online boutique, so striaght forward and easy to use. All items make great staples for your wardrobe.
